Cryotherapy in Long Island

Cryotherapy lightens noticeable dark spots and blemishes by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. As the treated area gradually heals, the damaged outer layer of skin falls off, revealing a new, unblemished layer of skin in its place. Cryotherapy is available at TOC Eye® as part of our cosmetic services. It is a great option for anyone with bothersome spots or blemishes on the face or back of the hands.

How to Prepare for Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy ModelPrior to the treatment, you will meet with a member of the TOC Eye® medical team to discuss your needs and goals of treatment. During this appointment, we will inquire about your health history, medical conditions and potential allergies. We will ask you about any medications or vitamins you take on a regular basis. If you have a special sensitivity to cold, this is a good opportunity to alert the doctor. You can also ask any questions you might have about the treatment and recovery.

Once your treatment date has been set, you will receive special instructions. You might be asked to stop taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications for a specified time prior to treatment.

What to Expect During Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is conveniently performed on an outpatient basis at our office. The appointment is typically short and you can return home almost immediately afterward to resume your normal routine.

The area to be treated will be identified ahead of time. To start, the doctor will direct the treatment handpiece at the blemish or spot for several seconds. The handpiece will discharge liquid nitrogen on the spot to freeze it. This won’t be painful, but it may be uncomfortable. The skin in the area will turn white as it freezes, and slowly return to its normal temperature and color. The doctor will slowly move the handpiece over each spot or blemish to be treated.

Recovering from Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy Model 2Mild redness, swelling and crusting are normal side effects after treatment; they subside within a week or so. Over the next few days after the appointment, the treated blemish or spot will develop a blister, which forms a scab. You must avoid picking at the scab to prevent any scarring. The scar should fall off on its own after one to two weeks.
