Botox and Dysport on Long Island

Long Island Botox Cosmetic Patient (Model)BOTOX Cosmetic & Dysport on Long Island

At The Ophthalmic Center, we see patients with all sorts of anti-aging needs and requests. We meet with many people that are starting to see signs of aging around the eye and forehead area, but do not yet require surgical intervention. Treatment with Botox or Dysport is an excellent solution for these individuals. The injectable products gently correct wrinkles and fine lines and can be administered quickly and virtually painlessly. Botox and Dysport have quickly become popular anti-aging solutions that promise rapid results.

About BOTOX

Botox has been used for many years and is considered by many to be the gold standard in wrinkle reduction. The original neurotoxin used for cosmetic purposes, Botox is FDA-approved for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that appear due to making certain facial expressions (e.g., squinting, frowning). When injected into specific points around the face, Botox temporarily relaxes the facial muscles and stops them from contracting. As a result, the overlying wrinkle smoothens and the treated area looks more youthful.

About Dysport

Dysport is very similar to Botox. It was introduced to the U.S. market in 2009 and quickly became a valuable wrinkle-reducing alternative. Like Botox, Dysport is made from the bacterium clostridium botulinum and is FDA-approved to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stopping muscle contractions. The most notable difference between Dysport and Botox is that Dysport is known to work a little faster. Also, it tends to spread out over a broader area after it is injected. This can be beneficial in larger areas.

Our doctors will meet with you, examine your wrinkles and access their severity before recommending Botox or Dysport. Both injectables are administered during a quick, in-office treatment. Small amounts of the product are injected into the targeted area through a fine needle. Commonly treated areas include the frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow’s feet around the edges of the eyes. The treated muscle(s) stops contracting and the overlying skin becomes smoother. This effect begins gradually, typically within three to five days of treatment, with maximum results occurring around the two-week mark (as previously mentioned, Dysport may “kick in” a little sooner). After treatment with Botox or Dysport, the skin looks softer, smoother and more youthful.

The effects of Botox wear off within approximately three to four months. Dysport may last a little longer. To maintain results, our doctors recommend regular treatment appointments. Proactively scheduling repeat treatment before the results of the first treatment have worn off completely can prolong the results of the second treatment. This pattern continues with additional treatments. After a couple of years, it is not unusual for people to go six to 12 months between treatments.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

It is important to understand that not all facial wrinkles are the result of muscle activity; some form from sun exposure, the natural aging process, genetics or smoking. Treatment with Botox alone cannot adequately minimize the appearance of these wrinkles, but a combination of Botox and filler agents (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane) can. Another aging concern that Botox cannot address is sagging skin, for which other treatment options must be explored.
