Contact lenses come in a variety of different material types and wear cycles. Some people prefer daily wear (disposable) contacts whereas others prefer an extended wear option. A Word About Contacts

Contact lenses can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, presbyopia and keratoconus. According to the CDC, more than 30 million people in U.S. opt for a contact lens solution instead of glasses.

If you opt for a contact lens solution, it will likely take you several weeks to adjust to placing them in the eye and wearing them for long periods of time. We will advise you how best to adjust during this initial period, such as steadily increasing the length of time you wear your contacts each day.

Contact Lens Materials, Wear Cycles and Design

Contact lenses come in three basic material types: soft lens, hard lens and GP (RGP, “oxygen permeable”) lens. (Soft/GP lens hybrids are also available.) GP lenses are smaller in diameter than soft lens contacts and can provide for sharper vision. But soft lenses are by far the most common variety. Hard lenses are seldom prescribed anymore.

All contact lenses have a shelf life which could range from daily disposal to six months or longer (in the case of the more traditional, reusable variety of lens). If you opt for a daily wear cycle, you must remove your contacts every night before bed, otherwise you could experience issues like infection.

The design of your contact has everything to do with the vision condition being corrected. For example, if you suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness, a typical spherical contact likely will be prescribed. A bifocal design can provide both near and far vision correction. If you have astigmatism, a toric soft contact lens will be prescribed.
