Retinal Disases & Disorders

1Long Island Retinal Diseases & Disorders

The retina is the tissue in the back of the eye housing photosensitive cells that convert light into signals that are carried to the brain. A healthy retina is crucial to clear, sharp vision.

As a full-service eye care practice, TOC Eye® welcomes patients in need of examination of retinal diseases and disorders. Our talented team is equipped with the training and knowledge to detect and diagnose problems with the retina — everything from irritating floaters and flashes to more threatening diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and. Our goals are to identify the root of the problem, stop or slow the progression of disease, rehabilitate the eye and restore clear vision as best possible.

What are Floaters and Flashes?

Floaters and flashes are visual disturbances. Floaters are more common and usually not serious, as long as they have not changed significantly. They may appear as particles, lines or a cobweb-like formation. Flashes, or sensations of light that look like flashing lights or lightening streaks, are more serious. If you are experiencing flashes or the onset of floaters, you should see a TOC Eye® doctor as soon as possible for an eye exam. After looking at the vitreous and retina in detail, our doctor will advise whether treatment intervention is needed.

What are Retinal Detachment, Tears or Holes?

The eye is filled with a clear liquid called the vitreous, which is attached to the retina. Age can cause the vitreous to thin and separate from the retina, leading to tears or holes. In the most serious cases, liquid can collect behind the retina and cause retinal detachment. Early detection and treatment intervention is critical to preserving vision. The treatment depends on the specific circumstances of the problem.

2What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration refers to the breakdown of the portion of the retina responsible for clear, sharp central vision. It is characterized by the gradual loss of ability to see clearly as well as dark spots or distortions in the center of vision (it does not affect peripheral vision). Macular degeneration is the country’s leading cause of vision loss and the more common “dry” form does not currently have a cure. However, there are ways to manage it in its early stages and slow down its progression. Studies have found that eating certain types of nutrients is one way to stave off early-stage macular degeneration. Lasers and medication may be used in the treatment of wet macular degeneration.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a consequence of uncontrolled diabetes. Circulation problems prevent the retina from receiving the blood nourishment is needs. As a result, the retina grows abnormal new blood vessels that can bleed and leak. If not treated, diabetic retinopathy can lead to severe vision loss.
